The great motivator, innovator and storyteller dies at 47 after fighting a fierce battle against cancer about a year. And yes, he’s Professor Randy Pausch who gave the famous ‘Last Lecture’. Rest in Peace, Randy…

Here are the great quotes from his ‘Last Lecture’

  • Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted.
  • No one is pure evil. Find the best in everybody. Wait long enough and people will surprise and impress you.
  • Brick walls are there for a reason. They are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. The brick walls are there to stop people who don’t want it badly enough.
  • It is not about achieving your dreams but living your life. If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself. The dreams will come to you.
  • We can’t change the cards we’re dealt, just how we play the hand. If I’m not as depressed as you think I should be, I’m sorry to disappoint you.
  • When you’re screwing up and nobody’s saying anything to you anymore, that means they gave up.
  • Enable the childhood dreams of others.
  • If you’re going to do anything that pioneering you will get those arrows in the back, and you just have to put up with it. I mean everything that could go wrong did go wrong. But at the end of the day, a whole lot of people had a whole lot of fun.
  • The best gift an educator can give is to get somebody to become self reflective.
  • The best way to teach somebody something is to have them think they’re learning something else.
  • It’s such a shame that people perceive you as so arrogant. Because it’s going to limit what you’re going to be able to accomplish in life.
  • If you present it as a storytelling activity, they’re perfectly willing to learn how to write computer software.
  • Never lose the childlike wonder. It’s just too important. It’s what drives us.
  • Help others.
  • When it comes to men that are romantically interested in you, it’s really simple. Just ignore everything they say and only pay attention to what they do.
  • Never give up.
  • How do you get people to help you? You can’t get there alone. People have to help you and I do believe in karma. I believe in paybacks. You get people to help you by telling the truth.
  • Being earnest. I’ll take an earnest person over a hip person every day, because hip is short term. Earnest is long term.
  • Apologize when you screw up and focus on other people, not on yourself.
  • Get a feedback loop and listen to it… When people give you feedback, cherish it and use it.
  • Show gratitude.
  • Don’t complain. Just work harder.
  • Be good at something, it makes you valuable.
  • Be prepared. Luck is truly where preparation meets opportunity.

More about his Last Lecture (the video and book), alright, re-post it below…

再來一個畢業演講,Carnegie Mellon University 的 Randy Pausch

Carnegie Mellon University – 8 1/2 x 11 Newsletter – May 22, 2008 – … And Randy Pausch Tells Them To Find, Follow Their Passion
http://www.cmu.edu/news/weekly/2008/May/may-22.shtml#article2

“I think the only advice I can give you on how to live your life well is first off remember … it is not the things we do in life that we regret on our death bed. It is the things we do not. Find your passion and follow it,” Pausch said, “and if there is anything I have learned in my life, you will not find that passion in things. And you will not find that passion in money. Because the more things and the more money you have, the more you will just look around and use that as the metric – and there will always be someone with more. Your passion must come from the things that fuel you from the inside. That passion will be grounded in people. It will be grounded in the relationships you have with people and what they think of you when your time comes.

… “I waited till 39 to get married because I had to wait that long to find someone whose happiness was more important than mine. And if nothing else I hope that all of you can find that kind of passion and that kind of love in your life.”

http://b-oo-k.net/blog/blog.php/2008/386

我做書倒很少考慮凸顯書脊厚度的事情。書主要是正面時期(新書時期)的銷量大,書脊時期(上架時期)不容易期待。

不期待「書脊時期」的借閱率根本就是將寶貴的資源埋沒了。
