嬰兒一出生便藉着和別人溝通，去學習生存的技能。原來睡眠中的嬰兒，會從母親的呼吸聲中學懂呼吸的節奏。完全不讓嬰兒和人接觸，他是會夭折的。
又例如：小孩學行時跌倒，覺得痛會哭，不覺痛便繼續行。可是，在痛和不痛間，孩子怎去判斷有沒有危險？答案是：他會留意媽媽的反應。如果媽媽表現出緊張的情緒，他便知道要信任媽媽的感情，不會走得太快太遠。

嬰兒對雙手的運用，比控制聲音的能力發展得早。因此，經過教導後，未懂說話的嬰兒也可以利用手語和別人溝通。網上有很多「成功例子」，說未滿一歲的幼兒，已懂得「說」出「肚餓」「想睡覺」等內心思想。
嬰兒的基本認知和能力，在很多父母未發現前已一早發展出來….
做義工照顧智力發展遲緩的小朋友，他們當中有很多到被收養都未懂說話，但會用學會的手語「說」唔該、再見，年長的更會手指指著你拿某件物品給他，甚至用行動 (坐在你大腿上) 要你跟他們玩。這種經與人交流累積學會的表達方法，就是他們與人溝通最有效的方法 (至少在學曉說話前)。假若父母甚少與嬰兒接觸，雙方均會難於理解對方的意思，應會對嬰兒的發展有一定的阻礙吧…
